Hansa Milan Kumar
About The Artist
Sometimes it takes an artist a long time reach their true potential.
Born and brought up in Bhopal, Hansa Milan enjoyed drawing as much as she enjoyed academics, and won many awards for her efforts. Choosing mind over matter, she pursued commerce at the bachelors as well as masters level. In 2011-12 a chance visit to Bharat Bhavan rekindled the artist in her. After an extended struggle, she moved towards abstraction which paradoxically awakened feelings of both clarity and conflict in her since abstracts were beyond her knowledge sphere. This is when she met her guide and mentor, Yusuf Yusuf, a much acclaimed artist on the Indian art landscape. Followed by a relentless time of labour, this was a turning point in her practice. She won awards progressively including her first State Award, selection for the Mumbai Art Society show etc. Hansa Milan Kumar's work belongs in the genre of abstract expressionism and is inspired by her positive outlook towards life & this energy is reflected through her bright and seemingly spontaneous paintings. She approaches her canvas as if going on a journey into the unknown, exciting beyond. To her, the act of painting brings an element of tension, of grappling with the unseeable which she builds through layer upon layer of colour, that retain a perennial freshness of tone, and when she finally connects with the image, it is simply to be absorbed by the senses for it's intrinsic message of joyousness.
